From Sunday, 14 June 2026 (Reiwa 8), Japan began operating the "Specified Residence Card, etc." (特定在留カード等) — a single card integrating the residence card and the My Number card (マイナンバーカード). 「2026年(令和8年)6月14日(日)から特定在留カード等の運用が開始されることから、地方出入国在留管理局では、翌開庁日の6月15日(月)から特定在留カード等交付申請が行えるようになります。」 ("As operation of the Specified Residence Card, etc. begins on Sunday 14 June 2026 (Reiwa 8), regional Immigration Services Agency bureaus will start accepting applications for its issuance from the following business day, Monday 15 June.")
Anyone planning to renew or newly apply for a residence card should check the different processing time and application counter well in advance.
