Residence Card and My Number Card Combined — 'Specified Residence Card' Launches (14 June)

From Sunday, 14 June 2026 (Reiwa 8), Japan began operating the "Specified Residence Card, etc." (特定在留カード等) — a single card integrating the residence card and the My Number card (マイナンバーカード). 「２０２６年（令和８年）６月１４日（日）から特定在留カード等の運用が開始されることから、地方出入国在留管理局では、翌開庁日の６月１５日（月）から特定在留カード等交付申請が行えるようになります。」 ("As operation of the Specified Residence Card, etc. begins on Sunday 14 June 2026 (Reiwa 8), regional Immigration Services Agency bureaus will start accepting applications for its issuance from the following business day, Monday 15 June.")

• Regional Immigration Services Agency (ISA) bureaus began accepting issuance applications from the next business day, Monday 15 June.
• Issuing the integrated card takes around 10 days longer than issuing a standard residence card.
• It cannot be issued at the airport on first landing — new arrivals will still receive a standard residence card there.

Anyone planning to renew or newly apply for a residence card should check the different processing time and application counter well in advance.
