"Which school will put my mind at ease for my first time studying abroad?" This is one of the concerns we hear most often when guiding students through study abroad in the Philippines.
Not yet confident in English. New to living abroad. Worried about meals, accommodation, safety, even health. For anyone in that position, our representative visited in person and felt this was a school easy to recommend to beginners — Stargate, a language school in the heart of Cebu City.
Designed for Japanese students learning English for the first time
Stargate's greatest appeal is that it is designed to let English beginners and first-time travellers from Japan start learning with as little anxiety as possible. It's built with Japanese students in mind, and students from other countries are warmly welcome too.
Lessons are built mainly around one-to-one teaching, so the distance between teacher and student is small and it is easy to ask questions on the spot. Rather than the flashiness of a large school, there is a homely atmosphere in which every student gets proper attention.
What our representative felt on visiting was that this is not a school only for people who already speak English — it is a school that does not leave behind those who are just starting out.
School and dormitory under one roof — less worry about the commute
Stargate is an all-in-one language school, with classrooms and dormitory housed in the same building. That means there is no need to walk outside to commute every day.
Lessons, meals and accommodation can all be covered within the one building, which is a great source of reassurance for anyone new to living abroad.
It is located in the centre of Cebu City, with cafés, convenience stores, massage shops and Japanese restaurants nearby. Rather than the flash of a tourist spot, the setting feels more like living locally while you study.
The standout feature: grammar video lessons made for Japanese students
No account of Stargate is complete without mentioning its grammar video lessons, taught by Japanese instructors.
Lessons with Filipino teachers are conducted almost entirely in English. That matters for building real English ability, but for beginners, grasping grammar in English alone from day one can be difficult.
That is why Stargate offers a further layer of support: video lessons in which Japanese instructors clearly explain the points of English grammar that Japanese learners tend to trip up on. Having this in place eases the worry of "what if I can't keep up with the lessons", and makes it easier to build English ability steadily even over a short stay.
The courage to dive into an English-only world, and the reassurance of being able to make sense of it in Japanese — having both on offer struck us as hugely encouraging for beginners.
Meals, honestly: high quality, but the system is worth checking
We also checked the meal arrangements carefully in person.
Stargate's meals are based on a menu overseen by a Japanese chef, and the quality struck us as high. Nutritional balance is also considered, making meals an important part of supporting daily life during study abroad.
That said, there are a few points where it differs from other language schools in Cebu. Three meals are provided on weekdays, but only brunch is served at weekends and on public holidays, so there will be occasions when you need to eat out or order delivery for lunch and dinner. It is also not buffet-style, so allergies and other dietary needs need to be checked in advance.

First-day support that is kind to beginners
For anyone new to living abroad, the first few days after arrival can be especially nerve-wracking.
At Stargate, support for settling into local life is built in from day one — you can exchange currency on campus, and staff will accompany you to a nearby supermarket to help you stock up on daily essentials.
Not having to worry about "what do I need to buy" or "where do I exchange money" the moment you arrive is a real relief.

A school where you can flush the toilet paper — the reality behind less hygiene stress
One thing that Japanese travellers often find surprisingly stressful when living abroad is the toilet and bathroom situation.
In parts of the Philippines, it is common practice not to flush toilet paper but to put it in a bin beside the toilet instead. For anyone experiencing it for the first time, this can be more stressful than expected.
On that front, Stargate's dormitory toilets are set up so that paper can be flushed as normal. For Japanese students, this is a genuinely significant point of reassurance.
Hot showers with plenty of water are also available, and each unit has its own washing machine, so you can do laundry on your own schedule during your stay. Details like these — how easy the bathroom and everyday facilities are to use — are easy to overlook in a brochure, but matter a great deal once you are actually living there.

Studying in Cebu is appealing because it allows for focused, mostly one-to-one English learning at a lower cost than studying in Europe or the US. Within that, Stargate struck us as a school that strikes a good balance between reassuring, beginner-friendly design and serious study at a manageable cost.
